The winter sun slants on the walls in Maxim’s room
While he sits at his old desk and puffs his pipe
The sweet smoke curls ‘round his beard - it makes an amber bloom
There’re so many words and letters still to write

He starts with a sentence - dips the nib in the well
Shuffling books and papers waiting to begin
Sometimes the world will make a man stay right where he fell
But Maxim has more inside of him

He spends his days with the children in the village
While his wife plays piano in the den
He remembers the manuscript that weighs him down
Wondering if he’ll ever finish - or when

Recorder/oboe/clarinet solo with whistle

He spends his days with the children in the village
While his wife plays piano in the den
He remembers the manuscript that weighs him down
Wondering if he’ll ever finish - or when
Through the morning window Maxim sees the snowy roofs
He hears the bells ring out as prayers leave the church
But tonight there’s a game of chess - for Maxim it looms
Sipping brandy quietly submerged

He spends his days with the children in the village
While his wife plays piano in the den
He remembers the manuscript that weighs him down
Wondering if he’ll ever finish - or when
